This Sweet Sauce (black) fried carrot cake may not be the healthiest breakfast dish around, but it sure rocks my socks.
It smelled and tasted heavenly. I could taste the delicious preserved radish (chye por), the fried egg and the tiny bits of white radish that was steamed with rice flour before frying. Oh such delight!
This is a Singaporean dish that no visitor should miss when they are in Singapore.
I could have carrot cake for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, dinner and supper. 😀

Er: that looks absolutely disgusting:) I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but it would have to taste a lot better than it looks for me to wrap my teeth around it.
Most of the stuff you put up looks divine, but carrot cake, fried? My brain is shrieking. I see fried carrot cake and I’m thinking Fugu….(that japanese fish that poisons you).
I know its culture and practice, and when I come to Singapore…..I will try at least a mouthful! If you say its great, I guess it must be….

brendan: Oh I can totally see where you’re coming from. This is totally delicious, trust me. There’s a white version, without black sauce added to it. Perhaps that might look more ‘divine’, heh. 🙂 When my sore throat heals entirely, I’m going to be eating my carrot cake again.
p/s: This fried carrot cake has no similarities to the carrot cake dessert at all.

It looks yummy!!!I heart carrot cake although i do prefer white keke.
And to the post on Mcgriddles: I so loved that when i was in the states. But i think it is not gonna be very nice…the bagels sold in singapore were quite awful, not even half as nice as the authentic ones:(

Brendan : Fairly easy actually :), you see the sweet sauced fried carrot, whilst looking really heavy and greasy is ironically rather light, so a cup of coffee or juice later, there’s really not much of an after taste. The crispy one of course is alot heavier of which after meal mints will help alot.
You really should try it when you head on down. It’s alot less scary than some of things you might find here.

Those looking for carrot cake in the states, there is a vietnamese restaurant in NE Philadelphia with a singaporean cook who will make it on request.. it is the one on Adams St/Roosevelt Blvd in the same plaza as the post office.
